A little over 11 years ago when I received a flyer in my mailbox for Lee Academy Dance Techniques (now Lee Academy Dance and Performing Arts) little did I know what that the ensuing phone call to enrol my then 2 year old daughter would lead to.
First and foremost my daughter Abbee and my son Jed and even myself have between us received almost 20 years of the best dance training available on the Central Coast. Lee Academy offers a great variety of performing arts classes and I would be safe to say that in our time at L.A. we have between us tried every style from ballet to acrobatics and every level from beginner to advanced. So it is with a wealth of experience that I can say Lee Academy provides a performing arts education of the highest standard whilst catering to the abilities, knowledge and interests of individual students.
Lee Academy also provides students with many opportunities to take part in extra training and performance activities. Some of the events my children have been a part of have included workshops run by LA and by outstanding industry professionals, guest teachers such as Joshua Horner and Keith Hawley, performing at Westfield Tuggerah and Wyong Leagues Club Christmas Toy Raffles, performing at various eisteddfods’ and dance competitions (both in troupes and as soloists) and travelling to Queensland to participate in the Showcase National Dance Championships. By far the greatest experience was when Abbee travelled with LA to America last year to perform at Disneyland and Universal Studios and take part in workshops at The Edge. I assure you that when I made that phone call 11 years ago there was no way I thought that within a decade that little girl would dance on stage at Disneyland!
I believe that the greatest asset Lee Academy possesses is its wonderful staff. Having known Studio Director Jo Cotterill for many years I can not begin to express how proud I am of Jo and what she has achieved. Her dedication and perseverance in achieving her dreams is nothing short of amazing and I honestly doubt there is anything Jo could not achieve if she put her mind to it. Over the years I have also had the honour of watching talented students become dedicated and talented teachers, each of them now passing on their knowledge and passion for performing arts to another generation. The LA staff are honestly amazing teachers however on top of this they are amazing people… kind, friendly, full of energy, fun to be around and always positive. Personally not only do I feel blessed that these people are providing my children with such a positive influence and performing arts education I also feel incredibly fortunate to call them my friends.
Through the many years we have been part of Lee Academy we have also been very blessed with wonderful friends we would have never met otherwise. No stereotypical “Razzle Dazzle” mums at Lee Academy just genuine friendly people who want their kids to have fun doing something they love.
I firmly believe that many of the positive attributes I see in my children as they grow up are there because they have had the incredible influence of Lee Academy in their lives. Not just the education provided but the support, encouragement and love of the teachers and staff as well as the positive energy that oozes from Lee Academy as a whole.

A letter from JOSH HORNER- LEE ACADEMY teacher dancing on Broadway in NY!

Friday, June 26th, 2009

Dear Lee Academy Kids and Parents…
OMG ( for the parents that means Oh My God…) So much is happening. You guys have brand new studios.. Congratulations and I’m on Broadway. Yes the big smoke. Little Josh Horner has made it to the Big Apple and dreams have come true for me.
It all happened very quickly, (my Broadway Debut) but over the years of dancing professionally I have been keeping my press articles and gathering letters form Industry professionals and to cut a very long story short, I applied and received my Green Card after 4 years of paperwork, emails and lawyer fees…
So the quick part was getting an email to come over to New York and replace an injured performer in Billy Elliot on Broadway. So most of you saw me in Australia playing the role of Older Billy, well, the understudy for Older Billy hurt themselves and I have now been here in New York performing in the show for 7 weeks.
It’s AMAZING. Doing the show is all the same and the goings on backstage is the same except everyone loves my accent, ( and I sound very Wyong might I add, you know, alla Kath and Kim, Noice, Different, Unusual hehehe) but the most magical moment is when I walk out of Stage Door at the end of a show and I’m in Times Square with all the lights and noise and people everywhere. Its incredible. I walk out and just stand for about 10 minutes soaking it all in, then a homeless man wants money and some rude tourist wants me to take their picture and I’m like “ok, time to go home”.
But my Debut was crazy, I had only been in NY 2 days and watched the show twice (there are some differences between the Aussie show and Broadway show), so I turn up to work on Sunday for an early rehearsal and the stage manager asked me how much of the show did I know, and I was pretty confident so I said most of it except a few new things, so they said “great your going on in 2 hours” WHAT?
I was cool as a cucumber but inside I was like “OMG- I’m about to do my Broadway Debut and Arrggg, No One knows… Do I actually know what to do out there ? Yes Josh, just shut up and do it… ” heheh
So a quick text to Mum and Dad and an hour of controlled panic later I was on and singing and dancing in costume and ON BROADWAY. It was fantastic. I looked out to the audience and thought, well it looks like Sydney, same set and same lighting but , oh no, everyone’s faces were different onstage and oh no quick changes…
I had a dresser chucking clothes on and off me and guiding me around. Everyone was so supportive. Screams of cheers for me after the show, hugs and well wishes.. It was truly awesome. All the little ballet girls made me a massive card to say Congratulations on my debut during the show. It was something I’ll never forget..
Everyone is very positive in the Theatre Industry here. They love their work, and let me tell you the performers work really hard, and in auditions, the dancers are full on amazing and can do everything. Dance, Sing (well,  belt), Act, Flip etc.. I just auditioned for Spiderman (new musical) and got through the first few rounds but then they asked us to flip, i knew i’d land on my head if I tried… Its at this point I was like “bugger, Miss Jo and I talked about me doing some acro classes and I didn’t get the time”, so I got cut, but it was an awesome opportunity to be in the same room as these very talented Performers..
I find though I stand out as I have strong Ballet technique. Usually at the auditions I find my technique puts me above most the dancers, giving me strength and grace over the the more jazzier dancer. Keep up your ballet kids… Its a crazy time to be here with the Financial Crisis and bloody Swine Flu, someone sneezed the other day in the train and I was freaking out. hehe, But I am living The Dream. My Mum and Dad, were so, so supportive with letting me do the classes and competitions I wanted to do, I think I have nearly pushed them to the limit, but I worked hard, and listened to my teachers and educated myself by listening and with looking at information on the internet. I’m proof that if you work hard, and dream big, things can actually happen… so keep up the hard work back home, I’m itching to do cartwheels with you all in the new studios and I miss you all lots…
Til I see you next time,
Big Hugs all round..
Love Josh xxx

Goodbye Mr Trippy

Friday, June 26th, 2009

We said goodbye to our very loved Mr Trippy just 2 weeks ago. It was a very sad day but I feel better now because Trippy was very sick so now that is over for him. As you all know Mr Trippy was a very loved boy who was part of our family for 15 years. The kids at dancing have always enjoyed all my stories about Trippy & he has been into the studios lots of times to have photo shoots & hang out. The girls loved him in the office too & he missed the girls so much when we moved to the Tuggerah HQ! Anyway, we love you Mr Trippy & you will be very missed at our house.

We had a great shoot that Jessi’s Mum bought her for her 9th birthday. Jess worked really hard & she tried all the things I asked her to do. She got so many good photos I even chose one to be used on the website. It was a really fun day & I think Jess really loves all her photos.

The day included jazz, hip-hop, progressions, broadway, cheerleading & trampolining classes taught by Katie, Alyssa, Jo, Haylie, Danni, Sarah, Brooke, Di R & Emma. It was a great day!
